Like a Game of Snakes & Ladders.....
Women in Business heard officially today that the recession is nearing an end and that improving economic prospects are just around the corner.
Over 80 businesswomen heard the news from Chair of Women in Business, Christine Boyle, who likened the last two years in business to "a game of snakes & ladders". The end of year keynote address was made today in Belfast at the Invest Northern Ireland funded event. Christine described how the recession has brought many businesses back down to earth while stating that although many had slipped down a "snake", there are many ladders ahead that we can climb to prosperity and opportunities with every roll of the dice. Christine encouraged businesses to get back in the game; a game is no fun without players! She referenced recent comments by Angela McGowan, Chief Economist at the Northern Bank who declared that the local economy pulled out of recession in the second half of 2009.
Christine also called on businesswomen across Northern Ireland to contribute to strengthening the private sector, as a strong private sector will be required to sustain the recovery and balance imminent cuts in public sector spending.
Also speaking at the event was social entrepreneur Caroline Casey, founding CEO of disability charity Kanchi and the O2 Ability Awards, who delivered a truly inspirational address on how she overcame her blindness to become one of the world's leading voices for disability awareness. She described how she finally had to admit to herself and the world that she was blind and how through achieving her dream of training elephants in India it led her to establish a worldwide foundation for the promotion of disability awareness in business. She applauded the women in the room and gave them her 5 rules: never give up, live the dream, don't fear failure, surround yourself with positive people and be dangerous.
