The Action Medical Research Lunch was a resounding success with The Rt Hon. Ann Widdecombe, giving a most engaging and witty talk to over 250 guests. She gave a true and personal insight into her life as a poilitican in Downing Street , how she became a successful novelist and finally her entry into the world of celebrity TV.

William Crowley from BBC Radio Ulster chaired this event and held a a question and answer session which was truly inspiring, to the point and very witty with Ann Widdecombe combining her in depth academic knowledge with her entertaining character.

She responded to a number of questions put to her by the audience. On Health she indicated " The NHS will have gone by the end of the century " The Government will always have to pour money into the Health Service stating that as soon as a new medical treatment is discovered, there will always be a queue of people needing that treatment. There will always be a shortage of money available no matter what Government is in power as it is all down to  budgetary costs. On Government and women she commented " One of the 101 Blair Babes complained about how rude the men were to her...". She commented " they were rude to each other too and they were probably rude to her because she was rude to them " She empahsised that women should stop thinking they are disadvantaged because we are women – ladies should seize every opportunity – we are business people who happen to be women; I was a politician who happened to be a woman.

WIB Director Juliana Sloan asked about Stormont and Ann tactifully responded – " Evolution is vastly preferred to revolution.  Gently let things evolve." Finishing, she discussed the calibre of people going into politics – stating good quality people will not go into politics and that we will end up with career politicians who have done nothing in the real world.

Also, Ann signed her novels, all of the proceeds taken were given to The Action Medical Research Charity. Pamela Ballantine was the compere for the day and a successful Auction and Charity Ballot were held with donated prizes from Women in Business members . We raised over £5,000 for the charity.
