Top 10 LinkedIn Tips

28/06/2011
A great article which explains a number of ways to get the most from your online LInkedIn account.

1) Spend time completing your LinkedIn Profile

When setting up your profile, make sure you include as much relevant information as possible. Include a professional looking photo of yourself, which will provide potential connections with a positive image.

2) Spend time on making Strategic Connections

Spend time linking with current work colleagues and catching up on past work colleagues and college connections. Have a look at their connections - are there any that could be professionally advantageous?

3) Get recommendations

If you have done a good job for a customer, get them to say so! LinkedIn claim that users with recommendations are 3 times more likely to get enquiries through LinkedIn.

4) Use LinkedIn Events

If you are hosting an event, advertise it with LinkedIn Events - this free feature makes it easy for LinkedIn users to see what's on offer and register their interest.

5) Join a Group (or 10!)

Joining a group is a great way to stay on top of the topics in your field of interest. Groups also help you pinpoint the main influencers in the field and signpost important connections. Recruiters often use groups to find job seekers.

6) Ask Questions

You may be asking a question as part of market research, or it may be a way to demonstrate your expertise on a topic. Either way, it will raise your profile within LinkedIn.

7) Give Something Back

As with all Social Media, LinkedIn should be viewed as a 2-way street. Use it to give something back, whether its top tips in your field, or simply answering a question that another user has posted - don't forget that this is also helping to raise your profile!

8) Use LinkedIn Applications

As with all social media sites, LinkedIn offers a range of 3rd-party apps to enhance your online networking experience. Spend some time exploring the apps on offer and find the ones that could work for you.

9) Have a look at the Right Hand Panel

People You May Know, Who's Viewed Your Profile, Jobs You May Be Interested In, Groups You May Like - all tailored to make your LinkedIn experience more productive!

10) Use It!

Set aside some definite time in your day/week to use LinkedIn - it's a very powerful networking resource and the more you put into it the more you will get out of it!
