New Visiting Professor for Ulster University Business School

Ulster University Business School has announced the appointment of a new Visiting Professor.  Alain Kerloc’h, who is co-owner of the Michelin starred restaurant OX, has taken on the voluntary role for a four-year period.

Professor Una McMahon Beattie, Head of Department for Hospitality and Tourism Management, explains, “The role of Visiting Professor makes a considerable contribution to the Business School both in helping to reinforce classroom theory and curriculum design for our students but also in bringing expertise to the School at strategic level.”

There is currently a significant skills shortage in the hospitality sector and it is extremely valuable to have a working partnership with such an impressive role model as Alain to stimulate and encourage interest in careers in the industry.

Our responsibility in delivering  our management degrees  is to prepare students with the relevant and appropriate professional skills to equip them for the reality of working life thus creating future hospitality leaders.  Visiting Professors such as Alain, can help shape the School’s academic programmes to ensure that students graduate equipped with the right skills set.”

Brittany born Alain opened the Belfast based restaurant OX in 2013 alongside his colleague and friend Stephen Toman.  A master sommelier and award-winning restaurant manager, Alain gained his experience in leading Michelin restaurants in Paris and Ireland including the renowned L’Arpège.  OX has been named as one of the world’s top restaurants and in September 2018 retained its Michelin star for the fourth consecutive year.

Accepting the honour Alain said, “I am delighted to take up this role as a Visiting Professor at the Business School.  It is critical for the future sustainability of our industry that the young people who enter it have a clear idea of what employers are looking for.  I hope to help guide the School towards better developing the skills and knowledge needed to maintain the growth of the local hospitality sector by providing practical insight from the ‘coal face’.”

Ulster University Business School has a cohort of 40 Visiting Professors representing a wide range of competencies and industry expertise.  Appointment is based on personal business achievement and the active contribution which the individual can potentially make in helping the Ulster University Business School to provide the optimum educational experience for its students.
