Be Mindful With Your Social Media
By Cassie Jane Buckley.

Social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, allowing us to connect with friends and family, stay updated on news and events, and share our thoughts and experiences with a wider audience.

It’s tough enough to keep off it in our personal lives, but when we’re invested in growing a business with social media, it becomes a completely different ball game of dopamine. It’s not a case of mindlessly scrolling anymore, it's something we depend on to make our business thrive so we can earn our living. This can add a dangerously new and obsessive element to watching our success, watching others success and constantly comparing between the two.

The constant stream of information, interaction (and sometimes judgement) on social media can be overwhelming and detrimental to our mental health if we're not mindful about our use of these platforms for our business. Doesn't really sound too appealing... so why on earth, as someone whose mortgage payment is dependent on social media usage, am I telling you this?

Because even after all of that, I still genuinely believe that the positive side of social media can outweigh the dangers when used properly and mindfully.

At the end of the day, these algorithms are working on the information we're giving them. We all have the power, and responsibility to shape our own feeds and the content we're creating. So here are a few tips...

“Does This Spark Joy?”

It’s time to Marie Kondo your feeds and unfollow any accounts that don’t bring you joy, inspiration or (reliable) information. Whilst a bit of competitor research is needed, check in with yourself to see when your comparison becomes a little too unhealthy or detrimental to your mental health. If you notice a particular account that keeps bringing you down, then it’s time to unfollow.

In terms of your personal life, I know it can sometimes be difficult to unfollow particular people with fear of consequences… so make sure you make use of that ‘mute’ button!.

Explore, Positively

Make sure you’re telling the algorithm exactly what you want to see. Head to the explore page and engage with content that you want to see more of. Throw some of your favourite topics into the search bar and click ‘not interested’ on anything that you don’t want or need to see. This is a great way to find some new creators that make you feel good!

Pause Before You Post

Whether you’re a brand or an individual, make sure what you’re sharing brings value to your community. If we all took a moment to think through how we would feel if we saw this content, the internet really would be a much better place. We can all do our bit to tidy up our wee corners and make it a positive space to be in.
