Why you need a social media strategy
Tuesday 16 August 2022
Social media has become one of the most powerful tools for promoting your business. For some time during the pandemic, it was the only way businesses could connect with their customers for months at a time. We all had to adjust to the new, yet uncertain environment. Some businesses thrived in this time, pivoting with creativity and innovation. Others were even born in the pandemic and started strong with their digital marketing from the outset. Yet some businesses are still lagging and haven’t caught up with all the behavioural changes of their customers.
Wherever you are on this journey, it is imperative that you have a social media strategy to keep you focused on creating the best content you can. Here’s why...
You Are Directly Impacting Your Business Goals
When you put together a social media strategy, the first thing you do is articulate your overarching business goals. It would help if you tried making these goals as SMART as possible, so you clearly understand what you’re trying to achieve. Once you have your SMART goals, you can build a social media strategy completely tailored to attain them. This ensures that so long as you are working within your strategy, you’ll know that every bit of time, energy & sanity you’re putting into your social media will impact and bring you closer to your overarching business goal.
You’ll Better Understand Your Audience
Defining your audience is one of the most important aspects of a social media strategy. “BUT I WANT EVERYONE TO BUY MY PRODUCTS“. Of course you do, but it’s not likely that everyone can or will. You must consider which audience segments will relate the most to your business and the products/services you’re offering. Who can afford your prices? Who feels the pain points you’re solving? Don’t be afraid to get too specific. If you know women are more likely to buy your products, then it's not discriminatory to keep your messaging more relatable to women.
You Stay Focused On The Platforms That Matter
A social media strategy gives you a chance to reflect on the platforms that will work the hardest for you. The number one rule with choosing platforms is not to try and do everything, just do some things well. You don’t have the time to be on five different platforms because chances are you’re not creating the best content on all of them, and if you are, that means you’re not spending enough time on your business! The two things to keep in mind are where your ideal audience is spending their time and what format of content you are comfortable (and have the time) to create.
You’ll Always Know What To Post
We’ve all had one of those days. You’ve not posted for a week. You know you need to share something, ANYTHING, to show the world your business is still alive, but you have no idea what to post. In the end, you throw out a crappy meme and hope you’ll hit double-figure likes on your post. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE LIKE THIS!
Even the most strategic of marketers fall behind on their content calendars, but they know better than to post & hope. When you have finalised your content pillars in your social media strategy, you will have clear instructions on what content you have decided to focus on.
It Saves You Time And Money
Running a business is not easy when we are spinning ten different plates whilst wearing ten different hats. Once you have a clear social media strategy, you have all the tools you need to plan, create, and schedule all your content in one sitting. You can start small, taking an hour to do your week’s content and maybe build up to a half-day to create your month’s content! You save yourself so much time from thinking about what to post and instead can watch your content post itself, leaving you only to engage and take care of your community. This gives you more time to focus on running your business, and well, time is money.
