Women of Colour Belfast is community group founded in July 2022 to create a safe, empowering space for women and non-binary people of colour in Northern Ireland. Born from a personal initiative, it has grown into a committee of dedicated individuals, united by a shared goal: to build community through connection, visibility, and celebration. The group hosts a range of events—from open mic poetry nights, community markets, panel discussions, networking gatherings, wellbeing workshops, and outdoor activities and hikes to supper clubs in collaboration with WOC-led businesses like Kubo and CWF Archives. Its standout initiative, the community market, showcases the contributions of small businesses owned by women and non-binary people of colour across Ireland. At its core, Women of Colour Belfast is about creating space where people feel seen, valued, and supported. As the community grows, the group looks forward to new collaborations and continuing to uplift and connect people of colour across Northern Ireland.
Maria Allsopp Whittington is the Outreach and Support Coordinator at Minorities Recognition Awards NI (MRANI), where she passionately promotes inclusion, cultural recognition, and empowerment for minority and migrant communities in Northern Ireland. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Maria worked for over a decade as an Electrical Engineering Technician in a male-dominated industry before answering a deeper calling: to teach and nurture children. A registered teacher in Trinidad and Tobago, she transitioned into education, driven by her love for children and a commitment to meaningful community impact. In 2022, Maria made the courageous journey to Northern Ireland with her two daughters, seeking asylum and a fresh start. While living at Duke’s Hotel and unable to work, she took the initiative to start a free summer camp for children to help them prepare for school. In the evenings, she taught conversational English to their mothers, creating a vital support space for migrant women over six months. She has volunteered with many organisations in the last 2 years. Maria has since completed a Diploma in Humanities at Belfast Metropolitan College and is preparing to begin a degree in Politics and International Relations at Queen’s University Belfast in September 2025. She is also an accomplished Toastmaster and public speaker, using her platform to advocate for justice, unity, and the empowerment of others. Guided by her faith and a deep desire to serve all of humanity, Maria believes that while Northern Ireland is experiencing necessary social and political shifts, true transformation must be grounded in humility, reflection, and acceptance. Her journey is a testament to resilience, reinvention, and a heart dedicated to building a better world. Maria wants to be a beacon of hope for thought who struggle with integration and acceptance.
