60 Seconds with… Elaine McCullagh of Hays

Tell us about Hays and your role within!

I work for Hays Specialist Recruitment which is one of the largest operating agencies across 33 countries globally. My role is a Business Director for the Accountancy and Finance Division within our Belfast Office.

What has been your career journey so far?

I graduated in 2008 as a fresh Communication Advertising and Marketing Graduate from University of Ulster with a placement year via British Council in International Business in Missouri Valley College USA.

Upon graduating I was luckily placed onto the Invest Northern Ireland Export Marketing Programme where I received an accreditation from the Institute of Marketing Ireland. After getting the travelling bug, I moved to Sydney Australia and worked for some fantastic brands such as Westpac Bank and Louis Vuitton. I Settled back in Belfast with Hays Recruitment and have climbed through the ranks to Business Director.

What is the 1 skill that helps you the most in your role?

Communication Skills – most importantly listening!

Do you have any advice for your fellow Women in Recruitment?

Get as much exposure early in your career to new organisations both big and small- find out what makes you tick, find your niche- this in turn will give you the control in getting what you deserve from an employer.

Are there any exciting plans on the way for Hays?

We have just recently been awarded a new contract for the supply of Interim Accountants into the Northern Ireland Civil Service which has provided massive exposure and opportunity for the accountancy and finance market across NI.

Who is an inspiration in your career?

My parents have been inspirations throughout my career, they are extremely hardworking and their main purpose throughout their careers has been to provide well for their children which I hope to echo.
