Officially entering the world of work during a global pandemic was an unexpected outcome for myself and likely every graduate of 2020 (and 2021)! And whilst it was a strange way to start my career journey it’s been a rollercoaster ever since.
I graduated from Business Management at Newcastle University in June 2020 and landed back in Belfast with a bit of experience under my belt. Having completed a full-time placement year at L’Oreal UKI in London during my degree. My focus has always been to learn as much as I can. Whether that was through placements or internships- I think there’s really no better way to grow your skills and experience than getting stuck in.
With that in mind I decided to apply for the Ulster University “Graduate Leadership” programme. Through this six-month programme I gained a PGcert in Leadership whilst also putting what I was learning into practice as a full time intern for a local company. I was lucky enough to gain a place at MedAll- and after the 6 months were up, I was offered a permanent position as their Director of Engagement
MedAll is a start-up based in NI- with a global outlook. Our mission is to provide “Equitable access to healthcare training and tools, for every healthcare professional, everywhere.” We offer open access online event and e-portfolio tools for healthcare professionals all over the world. Joining a start-up as a new graduate was definitely a learning curve, but one I’m so grateful for.
From growing our social media presence, to hosting our international conferences (the last of which had over 1000 delegates from 93 countries), no two days are the same. And it’s a real privilege to have had trust and responsibility placed in me from day one. Seeing the business grow in tandem with developing my own professional experience is so exhilarating- and it’s super motivating to see the direct impact your work has on business growth.
My role has also given me the opportunity to peek behind the curtain of Northern Ireland’s thriving start-up scene. When not working from home we’re based in Ormeau Baths with a host of other amazing start-ups and people. It’s a “wow” moment to see the amount of innovation and talent that is growing in NI- and I’m so proud to be a part of it.
