Women in Innovation round 2
The second round of Innovate UK’s awards programme for Women in Innovation has just opened. This competition will seek to fund up to 8 ideas from female founders, co-founders or senior decision makers, that address the 4 grand challenges posed by government’s Industrial Strategy, covering:

  • AI and the data economy
  • clean growth
  • future of mobility
  • ageing society

In addition to the awards programme we will be holding a series of Women in Innovation Business Success Events to help unlock the potential of women nationwide. The events will highlight opportunities for innovation support, provide expert advice and encourage discussion and networking. The Belfast event will be held on Tuesday 5 March 2019 in Titanic Belfast.

The story so far

We launched a Women in Innovation campaign in 2016 to address the disproportionately low number of women seeking support from Innovate UK. It also came about because research we conducted showed us that one third of women felt their gender had impacted their career in innovation.

Since launch, it has resulted in a 10% increase in registrations from female potential applicants for Innovate UK support and helped a 31-strong cohort of women, who won our Women in Innovation Awards achieve business successes. Rachel Gawley CTO of AppAttic and Christine Boyle CEO of Senergy, were winners in the first round of the awards.

According to McKinsey’s latest ‘Delivering through diversity’ report, companies in the top-quartile for gender diversity on their executive teams were 21% more likely to have above-average profitability than companies in the fourth quartile. This is just one reason why we are continuing with our Women in Innovation programme.
