5 reasons why businesses should be aware of mumpreneurs

Everyone knows what a new mum looks like. She’s busy, she’s changing nappies, feeding, bathing, dressing, playing, comforting, and all, most likely, with little sleep. But what you can’t see, is her thinking. She’s not just feeding, she’s thinking about stuff. She’s not just singing a lullaby, she’s reflecting on things. She’s not just pushing a pram, she’s coming up with ideas. And this is why businesses should never ignore the power of the mumpreneur.

1. The gift of maternity leave

Maternity leave is an incredible opportunity for women to have a break from their everyday work routine. And that doesn’t mean it’s a holiday, but it does provide a moment of space, in one area of life, to reflect on your career and where it’s going. Much like many people experienced during the 2020 pandemic lockdowns. This career breather provides a welcome opportunity for creativity and inspiration to strike.

2. Skills, knowledge and experience

Mum life can often look very simple and idyllic, with days filled at baby sensory classes and having coffee with friends, but the business world should not take for granted the skills, knowledge and experience women have built up in their careers. They may be singing, ‘I’m a little teapot’ today, but the entrepreneurial value they continue to hold should never be forgotten.

3. New perspectives

When you become a parent the world as you know it changes, and with that comes a whole new perspective on life. And looking at things from a new angle can be an incredible aid in problem-solving. This means women can create things they’ve never even needed before. They can get to know new markets and design products for different communities. This opportunity for fresh thinking is something many businesses are thirsty for.

4. Coming out stronger

Giving birth is one of life’s greatest challenges, and as long and painful, and traumatic as it can be, it is one heck of an achievement. It’s an incredible opportunity to learn how far your body can go. How magical and resilient it can be. And all of that makes you stronger. This newly discovered strength is now a part of you forever. This armour is carried into your future and can be applied to anything you choose to do.

5. Mums and their cubs

When a mother finally meets her little one, there is no unconditional love like it. Their instinct is to protect their babies at all costs. Mums become fierce, fearless and a force to be reckoned with. They know what really matters in life and this ruthless attitude translates into the business world. Mumpreneurs have thick skin and an innate fight within them, which means they will never give up. All qualities that give them an edge in the business world.

So as I write this, with my baby boy in naptime, I smile at the thought of all the mumpreneurs out there. The ones with big dreams and their entrepreneurial ideas overflowing.

Mums are superheroes. They have a strong community around them. They deal in the currency of love and have the power to make some serious money. So the business world should keep an eye out for mums with business brains. They are your competition and should never be underestimated.
