Disability Action 30th Anniversary!

Disability Action is the only Northern Ireland wide pan-disability organisation, providing support  to people with physical, mental, sensory, hidden and learning disabilities.  Through our community-based services we provide help and support to over 45,000 people with disabilities every year. Some of our services include:

Supporting Disabled People in Employment – Disability Action currently supports nearly 200 disabled people in full time employment. People with disabilities encounter many barriers in respect of access to employment and career opportunities. This is particularly true in the areas of recruitment and selection, opportunities for training and promotion and physical access to buildings.

Mobility Assessments and Driving Lessons - In a typical year our Mobility Centre in Belfast carries out over 800 driver assessments and provides over 1,000 lessons to disabled people learning to drive for the first time. For many disabled people, learning to drive or being able to continue to drive after acquiring a disability is a crucial factor in them retaining their personal independence.

Specialist Information and Advice – Our Information and Advice Unit deals with over 25,000 enquiries every year. This includes enquiries from disabled people and their carers about access to benefits, rights under legislation, housing enquiries, information on training and employment, physical access to buildings and where to find and access specialist equipment.

Disability Action Transport Service – Our Transport service is delivered province-wide, and along with our partners, we deliver almost 150,000 trips a year and directly deliver approx 55,000. The service is invaluable in helping people with disabilities to live as independently as possible and to enjoy full participation in social, economic, political and cultural life.

Supporting Young People with Disabilities in Training – Every year our Training Support Service works with more than 400 young people with disabilities participating in mainstream vocational training. Our Training Support workers act as a formal link between training organisations, employers and young people on the programme to ensure that employers are provided with an understanding of disability issues.

Throughout 2016, Disability Action is celebrating 30 years! We have a calendar of events planned, culminating with a fantastic Gala Ball in Titanic Belfast on Friday 30th September 2016. Would your organisation consider taking a table and help us celebrate 30 years of supporting disabled people in Northern Ireland? It will be a fun night, with delicious food, great entertainment and a good excuse to get the glad rags on!
