Tell us about your role and your organisation

I am a Trainee Solicitor at P.A. Duffy & Co Solicitors, a leading all-island law firm with offices in Belfast, Dublin, Dungannon and Omagh.

As part of my training contract, I work across a range of practice areas, supporting solicitors on legal research, case preparation and client matters. The role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience while developing the skills and knowledge required to qualify as a solicitor.

P.A. Duffy & Co Solicitors is recognised for its expertise in human rights, public law and complex litigation, representing clients in many of the most significant legal cases across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Give us a brief overview of your career journey so far

After graduating from university, I joined P.A. Duffy & Co Solicitors and began my training contract in September 2025.

Since then, I have gained experience across several departments and have particularly enjoyed the fast-paced and intellectually challenging nature of a legal career. I am currently studying at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies while working towards qualifying as a solicitor.

Alongside my studies and work within the firm, I have participated in a number of legal competitions, where I have been recognised for my ability to build strong client relationships and communicate effectively.

Although I am still at the early stages of my legal career, I have already had the opportunity to develop valuable practical experience and learn from highly experienced professionals in the field.

What is one skill that helps you most in your role and why?

Attention to detail is one of the most valuable skills in my role.

I enjoy analysing information closely, and the ability to identify subtle differences within legal documents can often be crucial. In law, accuracy matters, and even small details can have significant implications for clients and cases.

Having a strong eye for detail helps me approach my work thoroughly, ensuring that information is carefully reviewed and understood.

What advice do you have for women in your sector, industry or role?

Perseverance and self-belief are key.

Coming from a family with no connections to the legal profession, I have learned the importance of trusting in my own abilities and remaining determined when faced with challenges.

A legal career can be competitive, but confidence, resilience and a willingness to keep moving forward are often more than half the battle. Don't be afraid to put yourself forward for opportunities, ask questions and learn from those around you.

Believing in yourself is often the first step towards achieving your goals.

Are there any exciting plans in the year ahead in your organisation that you can share with us?

P.A. Duffy & Co Solicitors recently announced the launch of its Access to Justice Fund, the first initiative of its kind led by a law firm operating across both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The Fund has been established to provide financial support to individuals and communities who face barriers to accessing legal advice and representation, reinforcing the firm's commitment to ensuring that justice is not determined by financial means.

The firm is widely recognised for its expertise in human rights and public law and has represented clients in some of the most significant and sensitive cases in recent decades. These include the Covid-19 Inquiry, the Omagh Bombing Inquiry, the cervical screening scandal affecting more than 17,500 women, and the Lough Neagh environmental crisis.

The launch of the Fund represents an important step in expanding access to justice and supporting those who may otherwise struggle to access legal services.

Who has been your biggest career inspiration and why?

Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been one of my biggest career inspirations.

As a pioneering lawyer, judge and women's rights advocate, she demonstrated how the law can be used to create meaningful and lasting social change. Reading her book, My Own Words, left me in awe of her determination, resilience and commitment to equality.

Her career serves as a powerful reminder that women can challenge barriers, drive progress and leave a lasting impact on society through the legal profession.
