Tell us about your role and your organisation
I am the founder of AB Mortgage & Protection Services, a digitally based mortgage brokerage offering advice on all things mortgage and protection related. I am currently a one-woman business, providing personalised advice with a down-to-earth approach. My aim is to make mortgages and insurance easier to understand and, for many people, far more achievable than they might think.
Give us a brief overview of your career journey so far
I have worked in financial services for 15 years, starting in a management role with a well-known high street bank. After being made redundant in 2012, I moved into the mortgage sector and have worked my way up through the ranks within a brokerage.
To balance a busy mum life and build on the success I was seeing with my clients, I decided to step into the unknown and become self-employed. I’ve never looked back. The success over the past year has been phenomenal, and I’m now looking to grow the business further in the near future, with plans for premises and staff.
What is one skill that helps you most in your role and why?
I’m relatable. I take a very down-to-earth, “girl next door” approach, which helps clients feel comfortable working with me. I remove the jargon and simplify every stage of the mortgage and protection process. This leaves clients feeling empowered and more in control of their financial decisions.
What advice do you have for women in your sector/industry/type of role? Share any words of wisdom or any mantras that you might have.
Believe in yourself.
Put your face to your brand and let people know who you are and what you do. We work hard to achieve our exams and licences, and that’s not something to take lightly. Be proud of your achievements and recognise how important your role is. You are trusted to help guide people through one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives—and that is a huge compliment.
Never sell yourself short.
Are there any exciting plans in the year ahead in your organisation that you can share with us?
While there’s nothing specific to share just yet, the focus is on continued growth, with exciting developments planned for the near future.
Who has been your biggest career inspiration and why?
Clare Feeney of Mortgage Solutions Derry.
We work under the same network and set up our own trading styles for similar reasons. In just five years, she has excelled in the industry, becoming one of the top five advisors across the entire network. We speak almost daily - supporting each other, brainstorming, and navigating the fast-paced world of mortgages together. I would be lost without her constant support.
If you had to pick your soundtrack song to get you through the working day, what would it be?
Shake It Out – Florence & The Machine
How has your membership with Women in Business helped your career?
Women in Business has been a huge help in promoting my business and getting the name out there in the wider community. Having been a finalist in the 2026 WIB Awards for Best New Start up the exposure has been great for brand awareness. The community aspect and advice/ knowledge given at the Entrepreneurs Connect has also been a massive help.
