60 Seconds with Barbara Kerr

Tell us about your role and your organisation

I am a Senior Business Analyst with Choice Housing, one of the largest independent housing associations in Northern Ireland. Although part of the ICT team, my role spans the entire organisation. I work closely with colleagues across all business areas to understand what’s working, what’s not, and what’s needed to improve our systems and processes. My focus is on uncovering the real needs behind day‑to‑day challenges and helping to shape meaningful, lasting improvements.

Give us a brief overview of your career journey so far

I moved permanently to Northern Ireland from Columbus, Ohio last year. Over the past 35 years, I’ve worked across IT in roles including Business Analyst, Product Owner, Technical Writer, and Technical Trainer. Throughout my career, I’ve always enjoyed bridging the gap between business teams and technical teams—ensuring the right solutions are delivered to the right problems at the right time.

What is one skill that helps you most in your role and why?

Discernment. Understanding the difference between what people say and what they truly mean is essential. It allows me to listen deeply, clarify needs, and ensure that solutions genuinely address underlying issues rather than surface-level symptoms.

What advice do you have for women in your sector or industry?

Stay the course. I didn’t know exactly where my career would lead after university, but I followed the path in front of me and learned as much as I could at every stage. If you enjoy the field you’re in, commit to growing your knowledge and experience. With time, the right opportunities and the right direction will reveal themselves.

Are there any exciting plans in the year ahead within your organisation?

I’m particularly excited about my new role and another complementary role that has been introduced alongside it. Together, these roles give us great opportunities to create meaningful impact and drive improvements across the organisation.

Who has been your biggest career inspiration and why?

Women—across all industries and at every stage of their careers. The culture and the landscape have changed immensely over the years, and women have had to fight for their place at the table. My inspiration comes from watching women hold their ground, combat imposter syndrome, and keep moving forward.

If you had to pick a soundtrack song to get you through the working day, what would it be?

Definitely not my usual genre, but “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. The message resonates with me: life is a journey, not a destination.

How can our members best connect with you?

By email, on LinkedIn, or in person. I’m always happy to connect.
