60 Seconds with Julianne Dickenson

Tell us about your role and your organisation

I am the owner of Solutions Weight Management by Julianne, bringing specialist dietetic weight management services to Belfast and beyond. Based at 81 Rosetta Road, the clinic provides compassionate, personalised, and evidence‑based weight loss and health solutions designed to empower every client.

Give us a brief overview of your career journey so far

I'm not your typical dietitian — no white coat and apple here! I knew there had to be more to life than working in the NHS, and when I saw a dietitian role advertised in Bahrain, I knew I had to go for it.

Obesity is a major public health issue there, with some of the highest rates globally. My work focused on treating obesity directly. When I moved back to Northern Ireland, I noticed the opposite problem: people who would benefit from treatment often felt they needed to hide away.

I founded my clinic to help change that narrative. My vision is that everyone should have the tools and feel empowered to take control of their health.

What is one skill that helps you most in your role and why?

The Royal College of Physicians and the American Medical Association recognise obesity as a disease in its own right, yet here in Northern Ireland we still aren’t doing enough.

Being diagnosed with hypothyroidism at a young age gave me firsthand insight into how nutrition affects weight and overall wellbeing. Staying up to date with the latest evidence, combined with strong empathy, are the skills that support my success.

Weight management involves emotional, social and psychological factors. Empathy helps clients feel understood and supported, which is key to long‑term behavioural change.

What advice do you have for women in your sector/industry/type of role?

Very simple — as Nike would say: “JUST DO IT!”Trust yourself, take the step, and keep going.

Are there any exciting plans in the year ahead in your organisation?

Yes! I’m introducing workplace weight management and wellbeing programmes.

Who has been your biggest career inspiration and why?

My biggest inspiration has been Rosemary Morrison. As my mentor through the Explore It programme with Women in Business, she has been a constant source of encouragement and guidance, and I continue to turn to her for support.

If you had to pick your soundtrack song to get you through the working day, what would it be?

Journey – “Don’t Stop Believin’”
