Roisin McCrory, Owner of In The Know Belfast

Tell us about your role and your organisation
I am the owner of In The Know Belfast. I have been in my current role as owner of a social media management business for approximately 4 years, and as such I draw upon my creative and graphic design background in writing strong, innovative copy & eye catching visuals for social media platforms across a variety of industries for small-medium local, independent businesses.

Give us a brief overview of your career journey so far
I have been self employed for 16 years now. Since leaving art college I have been involved in the arts & arts related employment – most of which in a self employed capacity. My education background was in graphic design, but most recently I have run an Interior Design Consultancy & an art & craft business, delivering a wide variety of classes to adults & children at my own workshop as well as various community groups & local colleges. I also hold a Certificate In Teaching, which helps me in delivering teaching to adults on a number of subjects, including social media training to individuals & businesses trying to up skill employees.

Describe yourself in 3 words
Motivated. Honest. Creative.

What is one skill that helps you most in your role?
Definitely my creativity - it is invaluable in creating content copy & visuals, as it gives me a great eye for colour & layout through Graphic Design.

What advice do you have for women in your industry?
Be persistent - never give up on your dream of being self employed, even when it feels like you are making no career progress. Build meaningful business relationships by being honest & transparent and always delivering on work promises. Have a flexible approach to working - working for yourself doesn't have a clocking off time, but can be advantageous if you have children or other interests. Just be aware that you can never fully switch off, as you will always have your own business best interests at heart.

Are there any exciting plans in the year ahead in your organisation that you can share with us?
Hopefully gaining my first employee!

Who has been your biggest career inspiration and why?
I would always choose a woman! My sister has been a big inspiration, as she has held a high level executive position in a large company for many years, and faced all the challenges that brings with enthusiasm and determination.

If you had to pick your soundtrack song to get you through the working day, what would it be?
The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughn Williams

What's your favourite break-time snack?
Coffee!
