Tell us about your role and your organisation
As Membership Experience Manager at Women in Business, I look after every aspect of our members' journey, from joining the network through to ongoing engagement and support. I'm passionate about creating meaningful connections, delivering real value and ensuring every interaction is positive, seamless and rewarding. A big part of my role involves finding ways to enhance the member experience, improve processes and help our community thrive.
Give us a brief overview of your career journey so far
My career journey started with a part-time role in Woolworths in Banbridge, where, if I'm being honest, the unlimited access to the Pick 'n' Mix was probably the main attraction! When the store sadly closed in 2009, I had already secured a temporary Administrative Officer role with the Northern Ireland Civil Service, which gave me my first real insight into the workplace.
From there, I moved into the telecommunications industry, progressing through a variety of customer-facing and leadership roles, including Customer Care Agent, Senior Sales Advisor, Sales Team Leader and Systems & IT Trainer. After five years, I combined work with a personal passion by moving into the motor industry, where I spent nine years developing my skills in customer experience, operations and relationship management.
In 2020, I joined Women in Business as Membership Co-ordinator, spending three years supporting and engaging our growing membership community before progressing into my current role as Membership Experience Manager. Today, I oversee the full member journey, focusing on engagement, retention and delivering exceptional experiences that help our members and wider community succeed.
What is one skill that helps you most in your role and why?
Understanding people and their needs is probably the most valuable skill I bring to my role. The business landscape is evolving rapidly, and many of our members are navigating new challenges and opportunities every day. I always try to put myself in the member's shoes, considering what they are experiencing, what support they need and how we can add the greatest value.
That empathetic approach helps shape my decision-making and ensures the member experience we deliver remains relevant, meaningful and impactful.
What can men do in the workplace to be better allies?
By listening, learning and using their influence to create opportunities for others. That can be as simple as ensuring women's voices are heard in meetings, championing their contributions, challenging bias when they see it and supporting inclusive workplace cultures.
The most effective allies don't seek the spotlight. Instead, they help create environments where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed and thrive. Being a good ally starts with empathy and action. Taking the time to understand different experiences, actively listening and speaking up when something isn't right can make a real difference.
Are there any exciting plans in the year ahead in your organisation that you can share with us?
There certainly are, but I may have to plead the Fifth on that one!
There's a lot happening behind the scenes and it's an exciting time for The WiB Group. While I can't reveal too much just yet, members won't have to wait long before some exciting announcements are made. Watch this space!
Who has been your biggest career inspiration and why?
This answer might raise a few eyebrows, but my biggest career inspiration is Captain Kathryn Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager.
Growing up, I admired her ability to lead with both strength and compassion, making difficult decisions while never losing sight of the people around her. She balanced strategic thinking, resilience and empathy, qualities I've always tried to bring into my own career.
While she may be a fictional character, her leadership style taught me that it's possible to be decisive, support your team and stay true to your values all at the same time.
What's the best way for our members to connect with you?
I'd be delighted to connect with fellow members.
